If you’ve spent any time on fitness social media lately, you’ve likely seen the black-and-yellow branding of HYROX taking over your feed. It’s being called the world’s biggest fitness race, and it’s growing at an absolute breakneck pace, most recently making massive waves across Europe and launching as an absolute lifestyle phenomenon in Asia.
But what exactly is it, why is it suddenly everywhere, and more importantly: should a CrossFitter do it?
Let’s dive into the current trends shaking up the HYROX world and why your daily workouts here at the gym make you uniquely qualified to crush it.
Unlike the unpredictable nature of a CrossFit "Metcon" (metabolic conditioning workout), HYROX is completely standardized. Every single race across the globe is exactly the same:
The stations test everything from pure power to grit: SkiErg, Sled Push, Sled Pull, Burpee Broad Jumps, Rowing, Farmers Carry, Sandbag Lunges, and finishing with Wall Balls.
The sport is evolving fast, moving from a niche race into a massive global spectacle. Here is what's making headlines in the fitness world:
The competitive times in this sport are getting mind-bogglingly fast. Elite athlete Joanna Wietrzyk has been on an absolute tear, recently setting a staggering women's world record time of 54:26. Meanwhile, in the Men's Pro Doubles, Alexander Rončević and Tim Wenisch set a mind-blowing record of 47:40.
The takeaway? The "hybrid athlete" someone who can run a blazing fast mile and push a 300-pound sled is the new standard of fitness.
If you're looking at the rules, pay attention to the volume. The sport recently standardized the Women’s Single Open category to require 100 Wall Balls at the final station (matching the Men's volume, just with a different weight).
If you've ever done a high-volume wall ball workout in our gym, you know exactly what this means: it’s not just a leg burner; it’s a mental test when your heart rate is already through the roof.
While the individual race is a grueling test of stamina, the fastest-growing trend in HYROX is the Doubles and Relay divisions. It turns a brutal endurance test into a high-energy team sport. You and a partner split up the functional work while running together, making it incredibly accessible for anyone who wants to try a race without going solo.
A lot of pure runners sign up for HYROX and get absolutely crushed by the weight of the sleds and the lunges. On the flip side, powerlifters get exposed by the 8 kilometers of total running.
This is where CrossFitters excel.
Our daily programming is inherently hybrid. You already know how to transition from a heavy lift to a high-heart-rate cardio piece. You already know how to move efficiently through wall balls, rowers, and burpees.
The only missing piece for a CrossFitter? Building the specific running tolerance. Running a standalone mile is one thing; running a mile immediately after pushing a heavy sled requires a specific type of pacing and leg stamina (often called "compromised running").
Whether you want to sign up for an official race or just want to build an unstoppable gas tank, shifting some focus to hybrid conditioning is an incredible summer goal.
Keep showing up, keep building that engine, and if you want to dial in your running pacing for a specific race, come talk to one of our coaches. Let’s get after it!
